I started out the night with the usual M13 draft. I went 3-1 with a deck that included Talrand, 2 Talrand’s Invocation, Void Stalker, Sleep, and lots of very solid cards. My loss came against a deck with Tormented Soul + Dark Favor, which I was never able to answer in time. I walked out with 4 packs, and upon opening them I found a Drowned Catacombs and little else. Ah well.
Almost everyone at the prerelease had preregistered, so by the time I got there I could only choose from Rakdos and Selesnya. I don’t really think that Selesnya is good in a Sealed format, so I went with Rakdos. My pool contained Dreadbore and Rakdos, which were great for my deck, as well as Pithing Needle, Wild Beastmaster, Mana Bloom, and Supreme Verdict. I made a Rakdos deck with a nice curve and about 6 removal spells. My first three matches went very well, with Carnival Hellstead doing tons of work.
In the fourth and final round, I went up a friend of mine who was 3-0. Game 1 was extremely tight, and after finally dealing with Mercurial Chemister, my opponent was at 5 life and I was at 4. His Hypersonic Dragon was lethal, and I sat on the board with 3 small creatures while he had 2 blockers. I draw Explosive Impact and think that it means that it’s the end of the game, but a Dramatic Rescue leaves my opponent at two life. If I would have attacked, he would have bounced my guy and I could have won in response. Maybe it was the lack of sleep, but I’m still mad that I punted that game. In game 2, my opponent kept a one lander after a mulligan, but had 6 lands on turn 8. Things went OK after Electrickery takes out three of his blockers including the Chemister. Game 3 was another nail biter. I swung with a group and lost my Keyrune, but I got in for 2 damage to get to play Rakdos. Unforutnatley, a second Void Wielder came down and ruined my plans. I couldn’t get in for the rest of the game, Hypersonic Dragon came to finish me off. It was a great match, and I walked out as a 3-1 with 4 packs. Even though I could use those packs to draft at next week’s FNM, I decided to open to make myself feel better about punting the match. But nope, the most notable card I got was probably Dreg Mangler. Oh well, it was a fun night nonetheless. I had a fun deck, and played with tons of cool cards.

Been so busy the past few days, but I’ve got 20 minutes of free time now, so let’s review some cards!
The Azorius mythic is Sphinx’s Revelation. Quite frankly, the card is a bit boring. It’s power level is on par with Stroke of Genius and Blue Sun’s Zenith and I’m pretty sure that the only reason it’s printed at a mythic instead of a rare is to be part of the “X” mythic cycle. It could see some play in Control decks, but it’s just an OK card.
Tablet of the Guilds is dumb. The advantage over cards like Dragon Claw is that you get to choose two colors instead of one, but if you don’t gain life from your opponent’s spells then it doesn’t do enough. Printing a card worse than the Dragon Claw cycle is just a waste of a slot.
I like Centaur Healer. A 3/3 for 3 is always good in Limited, and a little bit of life gain makes it even better. I’d always be happy to draft a few of these.
Detention Sphere is very good. In any deck that can easily generate blue mana, it’s generally better than Oblivion Ring. It’s not especially exciting, but it is very good.
Stealer of Secrets is a nice Limited common. If it gets in once, it is very good. If it never gets in for damage, it’s pretty bad.
I don’t really understand Counterflux. As it stands, it’s Last Word for UUR. I just don’t really get why it has overload. A player rarely has two spells on the stack at once, unless one is being played to counter another spell. And in that case, one counterspell is good enough. If something like storm comes up before this rotates out of Standard then it could be pretty good, but otherwise overload won’t really matter.
Mercurial Chemister is pretty cool. A body of only 2/3 kind of scares me in a 5-drop, but if he untaps you should be able to pull ahead. Drawing two cards per turn or being able to turn any card in hand into a removal spell is a huge advantage. His body might be too small to see Constructed play, but it’s still a fun card and an awesome Limited bomb.
“Necropolis Regent” is the black mythic. It’s a 6/5 flier for 6 with “Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, put that many +1/+1 counters on it.” it’s a pretty big ability, but I’m not sure what decks are excited to play this card. In a control deck, this creature could just be a quick two turn clock. In a midrange deck, it really only pumps your guys when you’re ahead anyway. Probably going to be unplayed.
Ultimate Price is likely going to be unplayed in Constructed. It’s possible that this time next year multicolored cards will be more important, but don’t expect widespread Constructed play. It’s a pretty good removal spell in Limited though.

These cards were spoiled earlier today, but they were in other languages, and presenting them in English is much easier.
Sphinx of the Chimes seems pretty bad. It’s body is fine, but it’s ability is meh. The amount of times that you get to draw 4 isn’t enough to warrant playing this card. You don’t want a 6 drop that will maybe turn the tide in the game, you want a 6 drop that will win you the game.
Slime Molding is usually a pretty bad Constructed card, but it does have some unique applications. In conjunction with populate, it could be a nice finisher.
Martial Law is pretty sweet. It costs 4 mana, which is a lot for a removal spell, but it can detain a new creature every turn. This allows you to keep the strongest creature locked down, and change the target when something better comes. I doubt it’ll see more play than Oblivion Ring though.
Precinct Captain isn’t as good as he appears. He seems like a value machine, but really he’s just a 2/2 first striker for 2. If he’s getting in multiple times, you’re far ahead anyway, and the extra 1/1s are just guys that’ll die to a sweeper. Get rid of these while you can.

White mythic incoming! Angel of Serenity is a huge creature that might just be Constructed playable. The 7 mana is a lot, but it should be able to provide a huge tempo and card advantage gain. It enters the battlefield, and can get rid of as many creatures from the opponent’s board as are necessary. Most of the time, it’ll probably be best to exile two creatures from the opponent’s board and one creature from your graveyard, so that if or when the angel dies you’ll have another beater to match the two creatures coming back from the hand. I’m really loving this girl.

Genesis Wave for spells? Epic Experiment is pretty sweet. pretty awesome. You’re not going to want it in a deck with counterspells, but in a deck with lots of draw and burn spels this card could be great. I don’t know how it’ll work yet, but it’s something I’m going to try to figure out.
Pyroconvergence is one of those cards that you can open in pack 1, and build around for the rest of the draft. As long as you can pick up a lot of multicolored cards and some mana fixing, this card becomes very powerful.

One more for tonight. Growing Ranks might be cool. It’s no Bitterblossom, but a token every upkeep could be good. Then again, it needs you to have a token on the board for it to do anything, and you might not always have one.

We’ve got some sweet promo action tonight.
I talked about Dryad Militant before. The card should be good, so get your hands on this promo if you can.
Cryptborn Horror could be awesome. With a few creatures swinging in, this three drop could be worth a whole lot of trampling power. That said, it’s probably not actually Constructed worthy. It’s only good when you’re ahead, and it’s a bad late-game topdeck.
Deadbridge Goliath was spoiled a while ago, but the picture quality was terrible so I never discussed it. A 5/5 for 4 is no slouch, and he comes back for some big late game power. It’s nice to see green get some powerful 2-for-1s.

I like Cyclone Rift. It’s a slightly worse Disperse when 2 mana is spent, but the overload ability could be utterly backbreaking. I’m not sure how good this will turn out being, but it is certainly something to keep an eye on.
Jarad’s Orders seems like it could be a real power house. You get to tutor for a creature for your hand, and you get to throw a Gravecrawler or something with scavenge into the yard for more value. It’s possible that this card ends up seeing no play, but in the right environment it could be the central part of a top deck.

Wow, this card is awesome. Faerie Impostor can’t be played on turn 1, but that’s no big deal. if it can return Snapcaster Mage or Augur of Bolas to your hand while still giving you a 2/1 flier, I think its one mana well spent.
